1-Click Installs: Deploy Your Cloud Server with Nextcloud

by: Hostwinds Team  /  June 4, 2019

As you may already know, Hostwinds operates out of two locations: Tulsa, OK, and Seattle, WA. On a seemingly random note, a few of us here at the Seattle office have been noticing that the clouds in the area legitimately look like the beautiful Mount Olympus depicted in Greek mythology. The cumulus clouds in Washington may as well be the backdrop of a movie set, and they seem to have a mind of their own as they shapeshift from one abstract pattern to the next. Clouds are so mysterious, almost as mysterious as the cloud that houses our information over the internet. Speaking of the ubiquitous cloud…

Are you looking to store copious amounts of files in the cloud for free? There is an app for that! It is called Nextcloud. In all fairness, there are many apps for that. However, Nextcloud seems to stand out for a few reasons. Throughout this blog piece, we'll fill you in on all the unique features and tools offered by Nextcloud. While we're at it, we will also discuss the variety of advantages that come with using a Nextcloud template to deploy your cloud server in the Hostwinds Cloud Portal. No time like the present to get started. (Fair warning, a corny pun is coming up:) Onto the Next…cloud!

What is Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is an application that stores your files in the cloud for free, and, even better, it is offered by Hostwinds as a 1-click install template that you can add to your cloud server when you create it in the Hostwinds Cloud Portal. Was that a bit of a run-on sentence? What's that? It was riveting and entertaining, and that's all that matters? Wow, you are too kind! Just in case, though, I'll rephrase it once more.

Nextcloud is an open-source application that offers cloud storage. It also happens to be one of the 1-click install options one can use to deploy a cloud server in the Hostwinds Cloud Portal. Once your server is ready for use, you can start using Nextcloud right away. Furthermore, the cloud server will be configured to adhere to all of Nextcloud's specific requirements.

Let's clarify what Nextcloud is even further, shall we?

Nextcloud is much like ownCloud in that they are both applications that allow you to store large amounts of files in the cloud. The same founders of ownCloud created Nextcloud. The former came to fruition when individuals within the ownCloud team decided to start a new independent project. As a result of this, Nextcloud branched off and became its app. It is unique to ownCloud because it has an entirely distinct interface. There are also licensing and cost differences between the two, as Nextcloud is free and ownCloud is not.

Oh, and while we are on the topic of ownCloud, a shameless plug seems to be in order.

This is an excerpt from Part 1 of our "Skywalker Server School – Create a Server with Yoda" blog series in which we briefly explain ownCloud:

_"_ownCloud – Owncloud is an application very similar to DropBox. (Gear up for another dad joke:) YOU GO OWN THAT CLOUD!"

Although we stated that ownCloud is comparable to the well-known cloud storage app, Dropbox, it is still worth mentioning that both ownCloud and Nextcloud provide you with much more than just file storage. For instance, Nextcloud offers video and text too. This part of the application is known as "Talk." Nextcloud utilities also cater more to businesses than those provided by Dropbox. We will elaborate on that in just a little bit. For now, why don't we dive into some Nextcloud features and facts? On we go!

Why Use Nextcloud?

First thing's first: Nextcloud is excellent because you can install it regardless of the operating system you have. The application also has a handy feature that enables you to chat with people accessing your files. You can even conduct voice or video conference calls. This is convenient for businesses as well as individuals.

Nextcloud is definitely worth its salt (Is "worth it's salt" an actual expression, or did I make that up? Moving on either way!) because it gives you complete authority over every aspect of your experience. In other words, it gives you 100% dominion over your documents and information. Whether you share your files with a small or large group of people, you are the commander in chief, with full reign to decide how information is sent and received. It is your choice whether you allow the whole world or just a few of your closest buddies to view and access your files. Elect to set or not to set authorizations, and that's all there is to it. On that note, if you decide to grant a select few people access to your files, you can give them the option of setting up user profiles.

The best part? You can access everything from your smartphone. Nextcloud gives you the option to receive updates or notification messages on your phone as well. That is just the tip of the iceberg, folks, and now we'll explore some more prominent highlights and perks of Mixcloud.

What are the Perks of Nextcloud?

Nextcloud follows strict legal guidelines to ensure everything is safe, sound, and just where you want it. Robust security certainly qualifies as a formidable benefit of using this file storage application as opposed to others. Even though Nextcloud is open-source and free for anyone, it has a sterling security system. This feature pays off for businesses that use Nextcloud to store confidential company information. Strong security is also essential when you are video chatting or texting others via the app. It encrypts data while you transmit it from one place to another.

In addition to being enormously secure, Nextcloud makes it easy to connect with your team or community through its forum board. You can also add your touch to your Nextcloud experience, as the app allows you to star or bookmark your favorite files. On top of that, Nextcloud can be set up to be compatible with other applications, even if they are cloud storage applications. Not to mention Nextcloud has a great support system in place just for you if you need help using the app.

Whew, it feels like an endless array of exceptional features to mention about Nextcloud, so I am just going to blaze through the rest of these in bullet point format:

Nextcloud comes with…

-A contact list/book

-Editing features for files

-The option to encrypt your files until you permit to decrypt them (even when they are not being transferred from one place to another)

-A bunch of add-ons as well as hundreds of extension options

Now, before we conclude, we saved the best feature for last. The absolute coolest thing you can do with Nextcloud is:

Wait a minute, is that a bit biased of me to say that blogging is objectively the most incredible thing you can do with Nextcloud? What's that? It isn't biased because everyone agrees that blogging is objectively the most remarkable thing you can do in general? First of all, great point, and secondly, how convenient that is for me! Okay, all jokes aside, Nextcloud includes automation tasks that include publishing a blog post automatically. Hence, it is, in fact, perfect for blogging. Alright, time to wrap this thing up, folks. In conclusion, here we come.

Onto the Nextcloud

All this talk about Nextcloud, the cloud, the clouds, and ownCloud makes a dreamer like me compellingly think about existential things. What's that? Get back to the topic at hand? Will do! The two most important points of this blog post are as follows:

  1. Nextcloud is phenomenal, and one would be wise to use it to store files of all numbers and sizes in the mysterious "cloud."
  2. Nextcloud is one of the plethoras of 1-click install template options you have right at your fingertips in the Hostwinds Cloud Portal while creating your custom cloud server.

By the way, as we are on the subject of 1-click install applications in the Cloud Portal, an important question comes to mind: Have you by any chance checked out our blog post about FreePBX?
