Benefits of Municipal Broadband Networks

by: Bryon Turcotte  /  January 20, 2015

We live in a world where speed is a commodity. Even after a service is upgraded to be faster and more efficient, we quickly become eager for more. Immediate gratification is so common today that it's hard to remember the days when it wasn't as prevalent. However, if some of you look back, you can remember the good old days of dial-up Internet (insert shrill electronic screeching sound here).

If you have been following the news lately, you have probably heard a lot (both positive and negative) about President Obama and his support for municipal broadband networks. What would this mean for us? Here's the quick and dirty of how this could potentially be beneficial to you:

1. Your Internet could get faster. Not only would you be able to have your video, music, and games more quickly, but businesses, governments, and individuals could communicate more efficiently. It would help local and small businesses prosper, as well as attract larger businesses to the area.

2. Your Internet could be less expensive or even free. If that isn't enough to make you smile, keep in mind that it would also create competition in the market and boost economic development. Rural and low-income areas would be greatly benefited, and it could make the digital divide a thing of the past.

Yes, there are still many factors to consider, such as state laws, implementation issues, and funding. Still, it should be interesting to see how it all pans out.
