Moving My Site to Hostwinds

by: Hostwinds Team  /  January 25, 2020

Have you heard the news? Hostwinds offers complimentary website migrations upon request!

That said, what does 'complimentary migration upon request' entail exactly?

The term 'migration' can sound intimidating at first, but transferring your site, or your domain for that matter, to Hostwinds is profusely straightforward. We'll walk you through the whole process and make sure your migration is as graceful as the migration of a flock of birds. Smooth sailing, folks!

In other words: "Moving Doesn't Have to be Hard. Let Our Migration Experts Move Your Websites for You!"

Before we get into some crucial facts and information concerning website and domain transfers, clarification about what makes the two different is in order.

What is the Difference Between a Website Migration and a Domain Transfer?

You may be wondering: What is the difference between a website transfer and a domain transfer? Are they even different? The answer to question #2 is YES! They are quite different, in fact. They also both require a unique procedure to take place. Here's what this means: You don't have to transfer your website and domain at the exact same time.

As far as website migrations go, they involve, in the words of Hostwinds Support Team Representative David H, "copying all the data and database information for your site to your new host."

Domain transfers, on the other hand, are described by David like so:

"The domain is just the name, and you can transfer it between registrars."

We also got some intel from Hostwinds Support Team Agent Gregory G:

"The domain transfer is like submitting a change of address when you're moving. A site migration is like hiring movers to move all your stuff."

Well, put, Gregory.

P.S. Thank you for coming up with the title for this post!

On that note, a huge round of applause to our support team for giving us this information in a digestible form. Now we are ready for some details specifically relating to website transfers.

What is a Website Migration?

We already touched on this in the preceding paragraphs, but the technical definition of website migration is transferring all the information and files amounting to your website to a hosting provider.

In terms of website migration particulars, where do we even begin? How about the first steps to take in order to migrate your site to Hostwinds?

The First Steps:

Once again, David hit a home run by explaining the first steps to take if you would like to migrate your website: "If you want to request a migration from us, open a ticket, and select 'Tech Support' as the department. Select 'Migration' as the reason you are submitting the ticket. You will be prompted to fill out a form in order to provide the login details for your old host. If you don't know any of the values to put, you can type 'N/A' and clarify further in the body of the ticket."

After you've filled out and submitted the form, our technicians will begin migrating your site as soon as they possibly can.

Pro Tip: Make sure to check the migration ticket, as our team will send you updates along the way.

What Is The Migration Process?

Generally, website migrations take about one day, but not always. Custom configurations, as well as the amount of data transferred, can affect the length of the migration process.

Getting Ready for Your Website Migration

Did you know that birds always prepare heavily for their migrations? They eat an abundance of food before they take off and store it for the trip. Similarly, you can prepare for your migration with our 'Pre-Migration Checklist.'

Just to give you a sneak peek of the items contained in our "Pre-Migration Checklist" guide, here is step 1:

Step One: Verify that you have the information that is needed to connect to your server at your current web hosting provider:

  • IP address
  • Connecting Port
  • Username
  • Password
  • Specific details that we need to know

Pre Migration Checklist

After you prep yourself for the website transfer and submit a migration request via ticket, what's next?

Step 3 of Website Migration Process as Listed on Our Website:

"After our QA Team reviews the migrated content, you will then do the same. We want to ensure you're 100% satisfied."

More Migration Info as Listed on Our Website:

Each and Every One of Your Site Files Will be Transferred: "As our team migrates your site, we transfer all of your files regardless of their size or number."

You Will Experience Zero/Zilch Downtime Throughout the Process: "We take appropriate precautions to ensure that your website stays online as it is being transferred."

Don't fret. Hostwinds technicians take extensive measures to ensure all your information is safe throughout the entire migration process. This is a risk-free procedure!

You may be asking yourself, what do I do once the migration is complete?

Believe it or not, our pre-migration guide goes over the post-migration steps too:

Step One: Ensure you are completely satisfied with your migration and that it was a success.

Step Two: Contact your previous web hosting services provider to close your account.

Good News: You can actually confirm that your website renders properly after the migration has taken place by typing into your browser. This is a helpful option because you can make sure your website is perfect before changing DNS.

Corny Pun of the Day: It's now time to migrate to our next subject: Domain Transfers.

What is a Domain Transfer?

Let's Break This One Up:

What is a domain? "Technically, the IP address connected to your website establishes the latter's location on the internet. However, the domain name is sort of like a nickname for the IP. This is exceedingly helpful for those of us who don't feel like remembering the long IP address of every single site we want to visit. In other words, this is exceedingly helpful for literally everyone who uses the internet."

The above excerpt came from our blog post entitled "Square One Fundamentals: Domains, Subdomains, Addon Domains, and More," and you can view it by clicking the link below.

Now, what is a domain name transfer? A domain name transfer is simply transferring a domain from one registrar to another.

This guide will provide you with step-by-step directions as to how to transfer your domain to Hostwinds:

How Do I Transfer My Domain To Hostwinds?

Technically, you do not have to transfer the domain right away once you've migrated your website to Hostwinds. You can use a domain on our services even if it's registered elsewhere. Furthermore, you are able to order a domain transfer to us anytime for a registered domain as long as it is eligible for transfer. You cannot transfer your domain until it has been 60 since it was registered, transferred, or renewed.

An Expedient Tutorial About How to Transfer Your Domain to Us:

"Make sure the contact information for your domain is correct

  1. If you have private or protected registration, cancel those options
  2. Unlock your domain
  3. Get and have an EPP code (authorization code) ready
  4. Log in to your client area here at Hostwinds
  5. Click the Domains tab
  6. Select Transfer Domains to Us
  7. Enter the domain name you wish to transfer and click the transfer button
  8. On the next page, if it says available, select Click to Continue
  9. Select any additional configuration options
    1. You can purchase ID protection
    2. If you're using custom nameservers you can enter them here
    3. Enter the EPP Code
  10. Select Click to Continue"

How do I Transfer My Domain to You?

Seeing as the 'EPP code' was mentioned in the above quote, here is a bit of information relevant to such authorization code:

Whenever you decide to transfer your domain, first, you will need to unlock it in order to request the EPP code. You will have to make sure your current registrar unlocks the EPP code before the transfer can take place.

Moreover, according to David H, "We suggest providing Hostwinds with the EPP code either during checkout or as soon as possible in order to initiate the transfer."

A Word of Advice From Hostwinds Support Team Agent, Alex W: "Check with your registrar to make sure your domain is able to be moved before ordering a domain transfer."

More Advice: Remember that you are unable to change nameservers during the domain transfer process.

Did you purchase a year of hosting or more with Hostwinds? If 'yes,' you can transfer a domain that costs up to $25 at no additional cost.

A Note About This: To capitalize on our no-cost domain offer, make sure your domain transfer order is in the same order as your hosting.

A Note About Domain Transfers in General: A domain transfer to Hostwinds extends the domain registration one year for most TLDs.
