Attaching a Volume

A volume is a detachable block storage device, similar to a USB hard drive that you can attach to only one server.

Volumes are units of storage that attach to a server to increase its space. When creating the volume, you will want to select the size of the volume you make, give it a name, and select the location. You can also choose whether or not this should be from an existing Snapshot image.

Volume Management

Note: To make full use of this article and create a volume, you must log in to the Hostwinds Client Area. Additionally, this article outlines essential processes in your Cloud Control portal. To access your Cloud Control portal, click on the Cloud Control dropdown on the top of the Client portal dashboard menu and click on the Cloud Portal link.

Starting in the Cloud Control area, move to the top menu. Then click on the Storage dropdown link and then click on the Volumes link to proceed to the Volumes page. Here you can edit your current volumes or create entirely new ones.

You can manage the volume by clicking the links by clicking the Actions dropdown link in each volume's row on the table.

Attach Volume

The Attach Volume link allows the volume to be attached to another server. Click the Attach Volume link, and a pop-up prompt will display a dropdown that requests the server to connect to the volume. Select the server from a dropdown list showing the server's Friendly Name and IP address.

Once you select the server, click Confirm.

The volume status will change to attaching while the volume is connecting to the server. Once it is attached, the status will change to in-use. However, you may need to refresh the page to view the status update.

Attached Volume

An attached volume will display on the server as soon as the status changes to in-use. For Windows servers, the drive will need to change to online in the disk management settings.

Volumes can be attached to any of your servers and are not limited to use on only one.

Upload Volume Image

If you would like to upload a Volume and take a Snapshot, you can use the Actions button and select Upload to Image.

Name your image and click Confirm to begin creating this image. The image will be made available in your Snapshot Images when creating a new Volume, as shown above, to save your time and effort.

Detach Volume

Similarly, once a volume is attached, you will also have the option to detach the volume as well.

Deleting Volumes

In the Actions dropdown on the right side, you can choose to Delete any of your Volumes at any time. You will be prompted with a confirmation request to delete the volume. Clicking Confirm will delete the volume.
