Changing a Primary Domain

You can change the primary domain for your shared, business shared, or reseller service plan by editing your cPanel domain.

If the domain you are looking to change is already in use on another site, you cannot use it here. You will have to detach the domain already in use to move it to your primary domain. Remove any subdomains of your primary domain name before you change it to avoid any complications.

It is worth noting that WordPress can break when changing your primary domain, as can several other web design applications. For example, database requirements, file directories, among multiple other things configured within the cPanel, can cause this. If changing the primary domain for one of these applications, we suggest opening a Support Ticket with our technical support to make sure the process runs smoothly.

Note: To enact any of the steps outlined in this section, you must log in to the Hostwinds Client Area.

On your Client Area home page, locate the hosting plan you would like to change and click the blue Manage button to enter that server's page.

To the left of the dashboard and in the Actions dropdown, select the Change Domain link to move to the CHANGE CPANEL DOMAIN NAME page. Once there, enter the new domain in the text field provided. Please ensure that you enter the correct domain name, or the process will fail. Once entered, click the Change Domain button to finalize the change. Your primary domain will now change. All the associated files within your cPanel service that existed for your old domain will now display for the new domain name.
